Manchester Ship Canal :

Ships on the Manchester Ship Canal.The famous Ship Canal was opened in 1894 and was the brainchild of Daniel Adamson who set up the Manchester Ship Canal Company on 1st January 1882.Danial Adamson unfortunately died before construction of the Canal began.Construction of the Canal started in November 1887, when the first turf was ceremonially cut at Eastham at what was to become the main entrance from the River Mersey and the start of the Canal leading from Liverpool to Manchester.This was undertaken by Thomas Walker, an experienced civil engineer who had already been involved in the building of the Severn Tunnel for the Great Western Railway Company. He estimated it would take 4½ years to complete at a cost of £5¼million. Steam Tug Kerne :

Steam Tug Kerne

Portsmouth Naval Base :

Photographs taken of the naval ships at Portsmouth Naval base from my return trip to Portsmouth from Le Havre in France.Taken from the deck of the ferry as the sun was setting.Her Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth as it is formally know is home to the oldest surviving Drydock in the world,as well as being the base port for 66% of the Royal Navy's surface fleet.The Naval Base is also home to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard which allows members of the public to visit importantmaritime attractions such as the Mary Rose, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior.Click for more options →
