Manchester Ship Canal
Ships on the Manchester Ship Canal.
The famous Ship Canal was opened in 1894 and was the brainchild of Daniel Adamson who set up the Manchester Ship Canal Company on 1st January 1882.
Danial Adamson unfortunately died before construction of the Canal began.
Construction of the Canal started in November 1887, when the first turf was ceremonially cut at Eastham at what was to become the main entrance from the River Mersey and the start of the Canal leading from Liverpool to Manchester.
This was undertaken by Thomas Walker, an experienced civil engineer who had already been involved in the building of the Severn Tunnel for the Great Western Railway Company. He estimated it would take 4½ years to complete at a cost of £5¼million. His estimates were to be far from realistic as the canal would eventually cost over £15million by the time of its opening in 1894.
